What a Notary Does
A Notary Public is commissioned by the state to witness signatures and verify the identity of the people signing. The notary’s seal confirms that the person who signed appeared in person, was identified, and signed willingly.
Notarization doesn’t make a document legally valid, and it doesn’t mean the notary has reviewed or approved what the document says. It verifies the signing, not the content. Many documents require it precisely because a third party needs assurance that the signature is genuine.

What to Bring
Three things, every time:
Valid photo identification. A current driver’s license, state ID, passport, or other government-issued ID with a photograph and signature.
The complete document, unsigned. You must sign in the notary’s presence. A document already signed can’t be notarized, so bring it as is.
Any other required signers. If the document needs more than one signature notarized, everyone signs in person. If a witness is required, bring one, since a notary cannot serve as both notary and witness on the same document.
Important Limits
Two things a notary in North Carolina cannot do, and I want to be clear about both:
I can’t give legal advice or prepare legal documents. I’m not an attorney. I can’t tell you which form you need, explain what a document means for your situation, or help you fill it out. That’s the practice of law, and notaries are specifically prohibited from it. If you need help with the document itself, you need an attorney.
I can’t notarize a document with blanks, or for someone who isn’t present. Every signer appears in person with ID. I also can’t notarize a document I’m a party to, or where I have a financial interest.
If a document requires something I can’t provide, I’ll tell you and point you toward who can.

North Carolina sets a maximum fee per notarial act. I’ll tell you the cost when you call.

Do I need an appointment?
Yes, please call ahead. I work by appointment and can’t guarantee availability for walk-ins.
How much does notarization cost?
North Carolina caps the fee per notarial act, and I charge at or below that. Tell me how many signatures need notarizing and I’ll give you the total.
Can you notarize a document that's already signed?
No. The signature has to be made in my presence, or in some cases acknowledged by the signer in person, depending on the type of notarization. Bring the document unsigned to be safe.
Can you tell me what this document means or which form I need?
No. Notaries are prohibited from giving legal advice or preparing legal documents. I verify identity and witness signatures. For questions about the document itself, you’ll need an attorney.
Do you offer mobile or remote notarization?
Services are provided at the Cary office. Call to discuss whether other arrangements are possible for your situation.
What if my document needs an apostille?
An apostille authenticates a notarized document for use in another country, and it’s issued by the NC Secretary of State after notarization. I can notarize the document; you’d then submit it to the Secretary of State for the apostille.
Can you notarize documents in languages other than English?
The notarial certificate itself must be in English. I can notarize a document in another language as long as I can communicate directly with the signer to confirm they understand what they’re signing. I speak English, Hindi, and Nepali.
I need a witness as well as a notary. Can you do both?
No, a notary cannot serve as a witness on the same document they’re notarizing. Please bring your own witness.
